Dear Gent,
I should be grateful for your advice in connection with a matter concerning the Hong Kong military contribution.
As you know, we get through the Colonial Office each year a statement rendered in April, certified by the Colonial Treasurer, of the revenue of Hong Kong for the preceding year and of its assessment to military
=
contribution. As the statement is rendered in April, it seems a fair assumption that it cannot at that time have been audited by the Colonial auditors in the Colony. If that is so, it follows that on occasion the auditors may require some variation in the figures which will affect the colonial contribution. We have no doubt that any such variation is adjusted, but recent experience gives no indication how it would be done. Would it be possible for you to say without consulting the Colony whether any such variation would automatically be recovered or refunded in the following year's advances?

If you do not deal with a matter of this kind, perhaps you would be good enough to pass it to the right quarter.
